The Baxter Neighborhood is located close to downtown Grand Rapids, Mich. It is an area of great diversity – in age, ethnicity, culture, and worldview. Unfortunately, there are no nearby sources of nutiritious, affordable food, making the area an official “food desert.” The neighborhood faces other obstacles as well, including crime, violence, and a continuing decline in property value.
Despite the significant struggles of the community, we have found the people here to be resilient, loyal, hilarious, and loving. They are survivors and lovers of life. There is a hunger in them – not just a hunger for healthy, homegrown food, but a hunger for the true joy of God’s presence.
